In the winter of 2014, a domestic disturbance in Wichita, Kansas, ended in the tragic death of 54-year-old Robin Buckley, a White/Caucasian female. On the late evening of December 10th, Sedgwick County sheriff's deputies were dispatched to a residence in the Oaklawn neighborhood following a 911 call from a man claiming he had just shot someone. Upon their arrival at the home on South Elmhurst, they discovered Buckley lying in the front yard with a single gunshot wound to her chest.
She was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to her injuries approximately an hour and a half later.
The investigation that followed pointed to a complex and volatile situation inside the house where the shooting occurred. Authorities determined that the fatal shot was fired within the residence, after which Buckley managed to stumble outside before collapsing. There were five individuals present at the time of the incident. While Buckley did not reside at the address, she was known to the occupants. The man who initially called 911 and admitted to the shooting was identified as an acquaintance of Robin Buckley's sister. He was not immediately taken into custody, as he was receiving medical attention for an issue unrelated to the violent encounter.
In the course of their investigation, law enforcement arrested one individual, 52-year-old Donald Cook, who was present at the scene. Cook, however, was not charged with the shooting itself. Instead, he was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of criminal possession of a firearm and for interfering with the ongoing investigation. Authorities were clear to state that he was not the person who fired the weapon that killed Robin Buckley.
The case was handed over to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office for review and to determine what, if any, formal charges would be filed in connection with Robin Buckley's death. Despite the initial arrest and the confession of another individual, public records and subsequent reports do not indicate that any further arrests were made or that murder charges were ever filed against a specific suspect. The circumstances surrounding the end of Robin Buckley's life, born from a moment of domestic violence, remain without a definitive legal conclusion, leaving a lingering sense of unresolved justice for a woman remembered by friends as kind-hearted and loving.
