In the early evening of September 9, 2015, the life of 24-year-old Winston Downing of Atchison, Kansas, was tragically cut short. Downing was fatally shot outside of King's Super Store located at 912 Division Street in Atchison. The incident, which occurred around 6:00 p.m., stemmed from an altercation in the parking lot.
Downing, a father of three, was a well-known and liked figure in his community.
He was often seen riding his moped and was remembered for his constant smile and willingness to help others. His sudden and violent death sent shockwaves through the community, leaving family and friends to mourn the loss of a man they described as a great father and a great friend.
The investigation into Downing's death quickly led authorities to a suspect, 19-year-old Terell Dixon. It is believed that Downing and Dixon knew each other, and their encounter in the parking lot escalated into a fatal confrontation. Following the shooting, Dixon fled the scene on foot, sparking a manhunt.
The day after the shooting, on September 10, 2015, Terell Dixon was apprehended in Henry County, Missouri. He was taken into custody by the Clinton, Missouri Police Department after being reported as a suspicious person. An officer located Dixon near a treeline, and after a brief foot pursuit, he was arrested. Dixon was held on an Atchison County District Court warrant for second-degree murder.
