In the small town of Longton, Kansas, Robert "Bob" S. Stricker, a 57-year-old White male, was known for his big smile and willingness to help anyone in need. His life, however, was tragically cut short on December 23, 2021, in an act of sudden and brutal violence. Stricker, a beloved figure in the community who worked at Elk Valley schools, was at an outdoor gathering at a residence in Longton when the incident unfolded.
That evening, a man named Lyle W. Miller, 41, also of Longton, arrived at the gathering. After a short time, Miller unexpectedly pulled out a pistol and, at close range, shot both Robert Stricker and another man, 55-year-old Dewayne L. Smith. Both victims died at the scene, their lives abruptly ended in the quiet, rural setting of Elk County. The suddenness of the attack left the community in shock and mourning the loss of two of its own just days before Christmas.
Following the shooting, Lyle Miller fled the scene and took refuge in a nearby home. Law enforcement quickly surrounded the residence and attempted to make contact with him, urging him to surrender. After their calls went unanswered, authorities sent a robot into the house and discovered Miller deceased in the attic from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The investigation by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation concluded that Miller was the sole suspect in the double homicide, leaving a community to grapple with the senseless loss of two men.
