On the evening of March 26, 2022, a domestic disturbance call to the Baxter Springs Police Department set in motion a tragic chain of events that would end in three deaths. Taylor Dawn Shutte, a 27-year-old Caucasian female, had called 911 asking for help. When officers arrived at the residence, a camping trailer, they were met by 37-year-old Eli Crawford. After initially shutting the door on the police, the couple's two-year-old daughter, Clesslyn Crawford, reopened it.
Taylor then ran out of the trailer, at which point Eli Crawford stepped out and fatally shot her.
Following the shooting of Taylor, Crawford retreated into the trailer with their young daughter, Clesslyn. He then began firing at the responding officers, initiating a lengthy standoff. The initial officers took cover and did not return fire. As the situation escalated, assistance was called in from the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, the Kansas Highway Patrol, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, and the Joplin Police Department's SWAT team. Over the course of the next three and a half hours, Crawford fired more than 90 rounds from multiple firearms at the assembled law enforcement.
The prolonged and violent standoff came to a devastating conclusion. At one point, a sniper with the Joplin Police Department's SWAT team fired a single shot into the trailer, aiming for Crawford. Tragically, this shot struck and killed two-year-old Clesslyn. When officers were finally able to make entry into the trailer, they found both Eli Crawford and his daughter deceased. It was later determined that Crawford had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No arrests were made as the sole suspect, Eli Crawford, was deceased at the scene. The investigation concluded that Crawford was responsible for the death of Taylor Dawn Shutte.
