On a Monday afternoon, the 28th of November, 2022, the life of 47-year-old Jeremy Murphy, a White/Caucasian male from Anderson, Missouri, was tragically cut short in a violent encounter inside a residence in Baxter Springs, Kansas. The incident, which unfolded at a home in the 2400 block of Lincoln, also resulted in the death of 59-year-old Craig Guinn of Pineville, Missouri, and left 27-year-old Seth Guinn, also of Pineville, in critical condition from gunshot wounds.

Police Department was dispatched to the residence at approximately 2:40 p.m. after receiving a report of gunshots and three individuals having been shot. Upon their arrival, officers immediately began administering life-saving measures. They discovered that Jeremy Murphy and Craig Guinn were already deceased at the scene. Seth Guinn was found with life-threatening injuries and was transported by Cherokee County EMS to Freeman Hospital.
A description of the suspect was quickly circulated to responding officers. Shortly after the shooting, police located a man matching the description walking in the vicinity of the crime scene. The individual, identified as 41-year-old Kyle Butts of Independence, Missouri, was taken into custody after a brief struggle.
Following the investigation by the Baxter Springs Police Department, the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Kyle Butts was formally charged. He faces two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Jeremy Murphy and Craig Guinn, one count of attempted first-degree murder for the shooting of Seth Guinn, and one count of interference with law enforcement. Butts was booked into the Cherokee County Jail, where he is being held without bond.
