In the autumn of 2021, a dispute that began over a simple dice game tragically escalated, leading to the death of 31-year-old Peter Jay Miller III in Washington, D.C. The incident unfolded in an apartment on the 900 block of Maine Avenue, Southwest, a residence Miller shared with his acquaintance, Juan Manuel Guerra.
On the morning of October 6, 2021, emergency services were called to the apartment for a report of an unconscious person.
First responders found Miller inside the residence and transported him to a local hospital in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, Peter Jay Miller III succumbed to his injuries five days later, on October 11, 2021. An autopsy later determined the cause of his death to be blunt force trauma, and the case was officially ruled a homicide.
Initial reports to the police suggested a 'natural' death, but responding officers found the circumstances suspicious and quickly involved homicide detectives in the investigation. Their inquiries revealed that Miller and Guerra, along with a witness, had been playing dice. The game reportedly became heated as the rules were changed, leading to an argument. The witness left the apartment, and sometime after, received a call from Guerra to return. Upon his return, the witness discovered Miller lying unresponsive on the couch.
More than two years after Miller's death, on December 5, 2023, authorities arrested 31-year-old Juan Manuel Guerra in connection with the case. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder. During legal proceedings, prosecutors argued that this was a case of an assault that turned fatal, while Guerra's defense claimed his actions were in self-defense, alleging that Miller was the aggressor. In February 2024, a D.C. Superior Court judge found probable cause to proceed with the homicide case against Guerra.
