In the afternoon hours of a chilly Thursday just before Christmas, gunfire shattered the quiet of a Southeast Washington, D.C. neighborhood. When the sounds of the shots subsided, 28-year-old Russell Williams had lost his life in a brazen act of violence that also claimed the life of another man and left a third critically wounded.
The incident unfolded on December 23, 2021, in the 4200 block of 4th Street SE.
Around 1:21 p.m., officers from the Metropolitan Police Department responded to reports of gunshots. Upon arrival, they discovered one victim at the scene who had succumbed to his injuries. Shortly thereafter, they were notified that two other men had arrived at a local hospital with life-threatening gunshot wounds sustained in the same shooting. One of those men was Russell Williams, who was pronounced dead at the hospital. The other man who died was identified as 37-year-old Marcus Thomas.
In the aftermath of the shooting, investigators began searching for a vehicle of interest, described as a silver Audi with tinted windows and a sunroof, which was reportedly seen leaving the area heading north on 4th Street. The Metropolitan Police Department offered a substantial reward for any information that would lead to an arrest and conviction in the double homicide.
Despite the public call for assistance and the ongoing investigation, no arrests have been announced in the case. The identities of any potential suspects have not been released, and the motive behind the deadly shooting remains unclear.
