In the early morning hours of Sunday, August 18, 2019, the life of 18-year-old Erik Garcia-Holstone of Sparks, Nevada, was tragically cut short. A male, he was the victim of a shooting that occurred around 3:30 a.m. in Sun Valley, Nevada, during what authorities described as a large gathering. The incident unfolded in the vicinity of Sidehill Drive and Quartz Lane, shattering the predawn quiet with the sound of gunfire.
When Washoe County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene, they
discovered a chaotic situation with multiple victims. Garcia-Holstone was not found at the immediate location of the shooting. Instead, he was taken by a private vehicle to the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District station on Sun Valley Boulevard. From there, he was transported to a local hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Erik Garcia-Holstone succumbed to his gunshot wounds and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
The violence of that morning claimed another young life, a 15-year-old male juvenile, who was found at the scene and also died from gunshot wounds after being taken to the hospital. A third victim, another male teenager, was also shot but fortunately survived after receiving treatment at a local hospital and was later released. The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner's Office confirmed that both deaths were the result of gunshot wounds.
In the days and weeks that followed, the Washoe County Sheriff's Office actively investigated the double homicide. Detectives interviewed numerous witnesses who were present at the large gathering in an attempt to piece together the events that led to the shooting and to identify a suspect or suspects. The Regional Gang Unit was also involved in the investigation, although it was not immediately confirmed if the incident was gang-related. As of early September 2019, no arrests had been made in connection with the deaths of Erik Garcia-Holstone and the 15-year-old victim.
