In the early morning hours of October 6, 1979, 42-year-old Willie Carvin Bender, known to his associates by the moniker "L.A.," was inside Pooh’s and Sha’s Restaurant, located near the intersection of East 34th Avenue and Franklin Street in Denver, Colorado. An altercation erupted between Mr. Bender and an unidentified male patron. The confrontation escalated, culminating in the unknown individual drawing a firearm and fatally shooting Mr. Bender.
