In the early morning hours of August 9, 1995, 16-year-old Shawndell Banks, a Black male, was using a pay phone near the intersection of East 28th Avenue and Race Street in Denver, Colorado. While on the phone, an unknown individual approached him and shot him multiple times before fleeing the scene. Denver Police and medical personnel were dispatched to the location, and Shawndell was immediately transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries.
