On a summer evening in Denver, on June 14, 2001, the life of 22-year-old Raymond Chappell, a Black male, was tragically cut short. He had just pulled into a business located on the 9600 block of East Alameda Avenue with a female companion when they were suddenly confronted by an unknown assailant.
The suspect, brandishing a gun, demanded that Raymond exit his vehicle. In a swift and violent turn of events, the assailant shot both Raymond and his companion.
The gunman then fled the scene in Raymond's vehicle, leaving behind a scene of chaos and tragedy.
Both victims were rushed to a hospital for their injuries. While his female companion survived the horrific ordeal, Raymond Chappell succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The Denver Police Department opened a homicide investigation into his death.
To this day, the person responsible for Raymond Chappell's murder has not been identified, and no arrests have been made in the case. The investigation remains open, a cold case with the Denver Police Department, who continue to ask for anyone with information to come forward. The suspect who stole a car and a life remains at large.
