In the early morning hours of September 25, 2005, a promising life was tragically cut short in Denver, Colorado. Qutice Cole 'Cac' McGaughy, a 26-year-old Black/African American male, was shot multiple times while sitting in a car at the intersection of E 10th Avenue and Grant Street. Another aspiring local hip-hop artist, Michael Hope, who was 24, was also killed in the shooting.
A third individual in the vehicle was unharmed but reportedly did not cooperate with the ensuing police investigation.
Emergency services rushed McGaughy to a nearby hospital in critical condition, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries on September 28, 2005. Known affectionately as 'Cac,' Qutice was remembered as a loving husband to his wife, Verene 'Torie' McGaughy, and a devoted father to his son, Darrius. He and Hope were rising stars in the local music scene, known for their positive message and for handing out their CDs for free at recreation centers in an effort to inspire young people.
The double homicide sent shockwaves through the community, leaving friends, family, and fans grappling with the senseless loss of two young men with bright futures. Despite the years that have passed, the case remains unsolved, with no arrests made and no suspects publicly identified. The Denver Police Department considers Qutice McGaughy's murder a cold case, a painful reality for a family still seeking justice and closure for a life taken too soon.
