In the fall of 2016, a tragic event unfolded in the quiet community near Glenwood Springs, Colorado, culminating in the death of 28-year-old Blanca Salas-Jurado. On October 7, 2016, Salas was found shot to death in the Pinon Pines apartment she shared with her sister and young son. An investigation into her death quickly pointed to a case of extreme domestic violence.
The primary suspect in the death of the Hispanic female was her estranged husband, Gustavo Olivo-Tellez, who was 27 years
old at the time. Prosecutors asserted that the crime was premeditated, alleging that Olivo-Tellez had planned the murder for several days. Evidence suggested that he was incensed by photos on Salas's phone that he believed were proof of her infidelity. On the day of the murder, Olivo-Tellez had his girlfriend, Michelle Castillo, drive him from Denver to Glenwood Springs. During the trip, Castillo purchased the ammunition that was later used in the shooting. After the murder, Olivo-Tellez and Castillo fled to Grand Junction with Salas's three-year-old son.
Gustavo Olivo-Tellez was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. During his trial, his defense team did not dispute that he shot Salas but argued that it was a crime of passion, fueled by methamphetamine and alcohol abuse, and not a premeditated act. Despite these arguments, the jury found him guilty of second-degree murder. He was subsequently sentenced to the maximum of 48 years in prison. Michelle Castillo was also arrested and initially charged as an accessory to the crime. She later pleaded guilty to accessory to murder and was sentenced to 16 years in prison for her role in the events leading up to and following the death of Blanca Salas-Jurado.
