In a tragic turn of events on December 16, 2017, 30-year-old Emmanuel Baca, a male resident of Greeley, Colorado, was fatally shot. The incident took place in a rural area of Weld County, located south of Keenesburg near Interstate 76. Baca was not alone at the time of the shooting; his cousin, Isael Baca, was also present and sustained gunshot wounds but ultimately survived the attack.

The investigation into the shooting led authorities to identify Sammy Vega as the suspect. Investigators believe Vega was responsible for shooting both Emmanuel and Isael Baca. Following the shooting, it was also alleged that Vega set a truck on fire. The motive for the altercation and subsequent shooting has not been detailed in the available information. The loss of Emmanuel Baca was a significant blow to his family and community, who mourned his untimely death.

In March 2019, Sammy Vega appeared in court and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in connection with the death of Emmanuel Baca. As a result of his plea agreement, other charges against him were dismissed. Vega faced a sentence of 16 to 30 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections for his role in the homicide. A sentencing hearing was scheduled for April 29, 2019, to determine the final length of his incarceration. The case was prosecuted by the Weld County District Attorney's Office.
