In the small mountain town of Paonia, Colorado, a grim discovery was made on February 4, 2022. Friends of Michael Arnold, a 69-year-old male, and his companion, Donna Gallegos, 65, grew concerned when they hadn't seen either of them for several days. A welfare check at their residence on Black Bridge Road led authorities to a tragic scene inside the shop area of the home.
Both Arnold and Gallegos were found deceased, having suffered from multiple gunshot wounds in what investigators would later describe as a deliberate and targeted act.
The Delta County Sheriff's Office immediately launched a homicide investigation. The peaceful community of about 1,500 residents was shaken, but authorities assured the public that they believed it was an isolated incident with no broader threat. Their investigation soon pointed them to a suspect, 69-year-old Mark Burns. Investigators discovered that Burns had previously rented a home on Arnold's property for about three years, a tenancy that ended with a contentious relationship between the two men. Before moving to Idaho in September 2021, Burns had allegedly made threats against Arnold. Further complicating their history, Burns had been in a relationship with a woman who had previously been with Arnold and had even funded her unsuccessful civil lawsuit against Arnold.
Approximately two weeks after the bodies were found, the investigation led law enforcement to Salmon, Idaho. There, Mark Burns was arrested in connection with the murders. The crucial piece of evidence against him was a surveillance video from the property that reportedly showed him shooting Arnold and Gallegos. Burns waived extradition and was transported back to Delta County to face justice. His trial commenced in May 2025 and lasted over three weeks.
The jury deliberated for about eight hours before finding Mark Burns guilty on all counts, including two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated robbery, first-degree burglary, and tampering with physical evidence. The verdict brought a sense of closure to the friends and family of the victims. For the murders, Burns received two mandatory and consecutive life sentences in prison. The judge also handed down an additional 45 years for the other convictions, ensuring that the man responsible for the violent deaths of Michael Arnold and Donna Gallegos would spend the rest of his life behind bars.
