On the night of April 1, 2022, in Denver, Colorado, a young man named Ricardo Joseph Levon Santos, aged 22, lost his life in a sudden and violent confrontation. The evening began with Ricardo, also known as 'Ricky,' driving with a passenger, 20-year-old Vincent Tapia, and two female companions. The atmosphere in the car was reportedly jovial, with the men drinking tequila and smoking marijuana as they headed to a club.
At some point during the drive, Ricardo entrusted a revolver to Tapia.
The night took a dark turn when the vehicle Ricardo was driving was involved in a hit-and-run incident on Federal Boulevard. An argument erupted between Ricardo and Tapia following the collision. The disagreement escalated, prompting Ricardo to pull the car over at 16th Avenue and Irving Street, not far from Empower Field. Both men exited the vehicle to confront each other physically.
The verbal altercation quickly became fatal. During the fight, Vincent Tapia produced the revolver Ricardo had given him earlier and fired it, striking Ricardo twice. As Ricardo lay wounded, Tapia fled the scene on foot. Police officers responding to the 911 calls found Tapia sprinting about five blocks away from the scene within minutes of the shooting. He was taken into custody, and the revolver was found in his possession. Ricardo Santos was rushed to Denver Health Medical Center, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.
Vincent Tapia was subsequently charged with the murder of Ricardo Santos. A jury found him guilty of 2nd Degree Murder, and a Denver District Court judge sentenced him to 40 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections. The tragic incident was described by the Denver District Attorney as a 'senseless act of violence,' highlighting the devastating consequences of using firearms to resolve disputes.
