In the small community of New Castle, Colorado, the events of April 11, 2022, left a family grappling with not only the loss of two loved ones but also with lingering questions about the investigation into their deaths. On that day, 19-year-old Tanner Zancanella, a male identified as Black / African American, was found deceased in his home. His mother, 80-year-old Darlene Brooks, was also found dead at the residence.
The initial call to authorities came from Bill Brooks, Darlene's
husband and Tanner's stepfather, who reported his wife's death from a grocery store several miles away. When deputies from the Garfield County Sheriff's Office responded to the home on County Road 243, they located Darlene's body. However, in what would become a point of significant contention, they did not discover Tanner's body. It was not until the following day that other family members found him in his bedroom.
The lead investigator assigned to the case quickly determined the deaths were the result of a murder-suicide committed by Darlene. This conclusion, reached within minutes of her arrival on the scene, was met with disbelief and criticism from the family and a former chief investigator for the 9th Judicial District Attorney's Office. They raised concerns that the investigation was not thorough and that other possibilities were not adequately considered. The handling of the case, including a failure to treat the residence as a crime scene until proven otherwise and significant delays in interviewing key witnesses, drew public scrutiny. For instance, the initial 911 call made by Bill Brooks was reportedly not reviewed by the lead investigator until nine months after the incident.
Despite the family's concerns and the questions raised by an experienced former investigator, there have been no arrests made in connection with the deaths of Tanner Zancanella and Darlene Brooks. The case remains unresolved, with no suspects publicly identified or charged, leaving a cloud of uncertainty and a family's search for answers ongoing.
