On December 6, 2022, a tragic incident occurred in Lakewood, Colorado, resulting in the death of 26-year-old Jose Javier Mendoza-Ortiz. The events unfolded in the early hours of the morning when, around 1 a.m., officers from the Lakewood Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting an unconscious man lying on the sidewalk with shell casings nearby, located in the area of 13th Avenue and Pierce Street.
