On July 29, 1907, 27-year-old Deputy Sheriff Charles B. Smith of the Grant County Sheriff's Office in Silver City, New Mexico, was fatally shot while responding to a disturbance involving an intoxicated individual. The suspect had been firing a weapon from his porch, endangering nearby civilians.
