On July 29, 1907, 27-year-old Deputy Sheriff Charles B. Smith of the Grant County Sheriff's Office in Silver City, New Mexico, was fatally shot while responding to a disturbance involving an intoxicated individual. The suspect had been firing a weapon from his porch, endangering nearby civilians.
Upon arriving at the scene, Deputy Smith attempted to enter the suspect's residence. As he pushed open the door, the suspect opened fire, striking Deputy Smith and causing fatal injuries.
Following a standoff with additional officers, the 27-year-old suspect was apprehended.
On March 28, 1908, the assailant was convicted of second-degree murder and received a 99-year prison sentence. However, he was paroled on April 19, 1917, after serving approximately nine years of his sentence.
