On October 8, 1979, 30-year-old Deputy Sheriff Thomas Chesley Bedford Jr. of the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office in New Mexico was fatally shot while investigating a series of burglaries in the Nogal area. During his patrol, Deputy Bedford encountered two individuals, one of whom was armed with a rifle. He instructed them to place the rifle on the hood of his patrol car. As he proceeded with his questioning, one of the suspects retrieved a handgun from the other's pocket and shot Deputy Bedford. After he fell, the assailant stood over him and fired four additional shots, ensuring his death.
The perpetrators fled the scene but were subsequently apprehended. Both were convicted of capital murder and received life sentences for their roles in the deputy's death.
Deputy Bedford had been with the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office for a brief period and was known for his dedication to duty. He was survived by his wife and two children. In honor of his service and sacrifice, a sheriff's department substation was named after him, ensuring that his commitment to law enforcement is remembered.
