In the early hours of a Saturday in April 2015, the life of 21-year-old Guimel Vasquez was tragically cut short in what was described by authorities as an accidental shooting. A young Hispanic male, Vasquez was in the vicinity of East Darby Road, just south of Roswell, New Mexico, when the incident occurred around 12:20 a.m. on April 18th. The single gunshot wound he sustained set off a frantic effort to save him.
Immediately following the shooting, family members rushed to transport
Vasquez to a local hospital in their own vehicle. Along the way, they were intercepted by emergency responders from the Roswell and Midway Fire and EMS departments, who took over his care and completed the journey to the hospital. Medical personnel worked to stabilize him through emergency surgery, preparing him for a flight to a hospital in Lubbock, Texas, for more advanced care.
Despite the urgent medical intervention, Guimel Vasquez succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving at the Texas hospital. The Chaves County Sheriff's Office began an investigation into the shooting. Initial reports from the sheriff's department indicated that as more individuals were interviewed, the evidence increasingly pointed towards the shooting being a tragic accident. The individual responsible for the shooting was reported to be devastated by the outcome. Following the initial investigation, the case was slated to be turned over to the district attorney's office for a review to determine whether any charges would be filed.
