On July 28, 2015, a fatal shooting occurred in the southeastern New Mexico city of Jal, resulting in the death of 21-year-old Mathew Lujan. The incident began when Jal police received a 911 call around 2:30 a.m. regarding a shooting on South Second Street. Upon responding to the scene, officers found Mathew Lujan with an apparent gunshot wound. Despite being transported to a hospital in Kermit, Texas, Lujan succumbed to his injuries.
