In the early morning hours of July 23, 2019, a verbal dispute at a car wash on San Mateo and Marble in Albuquerque, New Mexico, turned deadly, claiming the life of 30-year-old Matthew Shaw. Shaw, a male, was with his brother when they were confronted by two men.
Surveillance footage from the car wash captured the tragic events as they unfolded. The video showed one of the men, later identified as 22-year-old Jarrod Olguin, brandishing a handgun.
Following a brief interaction, the other man with Olguin walked away. It was then that Olguin opened fire, shooting Matthew Shaw in the back as he and his brother were trying to leave the scene.
Following the release of the surveillance video to the public, the Albuquerque Police Department received numerous tips that led to the identification of Olguin as the suspected shooter. One of the crucial tips came from Olguin's own mother, who recognized her son in the footage and contacted the authorities. She informed detectives that her son had called her after the shooting, admitting that he had "messed up."
Based on the evidence from the surveillance video and the tips received, an arrest warrant was issued for Jarrod Olguin on a charge of murder. At the time of the identification, police described him as being on the run. The other man seen in the video with Olguin was not immediately charged. Public records indicated that just a week before the fatal shooting, Olguin had been arrested and released in a separate incident where he allegedly threatened a woman with a gun.
