Lawrence Howard, a 29-year-old male, was shot on the afternoon of January 29, 2020, in southeast Albuquerque near Kathryn Avenue and Arizona Street. Officers found him with a gunshot wound to the head; he was taken to a hospital as detectives began the investigation. Local victim records later memorialized him as having “lost to gun violence” on that date in Albuquerque.
Within two days, police identified the suspect as Howard's 14-year-old cousin, Jevyn Steadman, who turned himself in and was booked on an open count of murder along with related gun charges. A criminal complaint described an argument at a home in the San Pedro/Kathryn area after the teen had been showing off a stolen gun; Howard followed him outside to calm things down, and a single shot rang out. In early court appearances, prosecutors moved to have the case handled with adult-level consequences, while the teen's defense raised competency and other juvenile-process questions.
The case ultimately resolved the following spring. Steadman, then 15, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and received a six-year sentence for killing his cousin in the January 29, 2020 shooting. Coverage at the time noted the plea and sentence, closing the criminal case against the sole identified suspect; no additional arrests were reported.
