In the fall of 2020, a young man's life was tragically cut short in a violent encounter at a park in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Elijah Mirabal, a 22-year-old male, was fatally shot on October 29, 2020, during what he believed was a prearranged marijuana deal. The plan, as he understood it, was to meet a girl at North Domingo Baca Park to conduct the sale.
He was accompanied by another man for the meeting.
Upon their arrival at the park, the situation quickly devolved into an attempted robbery. Two teenagers, 18-year-old Jaden Sandoval and 17-year-old Noah Duran, confronted Mirabal and his companion with the intent to rob them. As the situation escalated, Mirabal attempted to flee the scene by driving away. It was at this moment that Sandoval and Duran opened fire on the vehicle. Mirabal was struck and killed by the gunfire, and his passenger was also injured in the attack.
In the aftermath of the shooting, both Jaden Sandoval and Noah Duran turned themselves in to the authorities. They faced multiple charges, including murder, for their roles in the fatal robbery attempt. Jaden Sandoval eventually pleaded no contest to charges of conspiracy and armed robbery. He maintained that he never intended for anyone to be killed during the commission of the crime. For his involvement, he was sentenced to nine years in prison. Noah Duran, the individual who fired the shot that killed Mirabal, received a much lengthier sentence of 29 years for his part in the murder.
