On November 2, 2021, a fatal encounter in a parking lot in southwest Albuquerque cut short the life of 31-year-old Hispanic male, Jerome T. Romo Lucero. The events unfolded at a furniture store located at Central and Atrisco, where a man named Hakamine Miller and three of his co-workers perceived Lucero to be tampering with equipment at their worksite.
Believing Lucero was in the act of stealing, Miller and his colleagues pursued him through the parking lot.
During this chase, Miller discharged a firearm, striking and fatally wounding Lucero. The incident was investigated by the Albuquerque Police Department as a homicide.
Hakamine Miller was later arrested in connection with the shooting. In August 2023, he accepted a plea deal, pleading no contest to charges of involuntary manslaughter with a firearm enhancement and tampering with evidence. Citing his lack of a prior criminal history, the court sentenced Miller to four and a half years of probation for his role in the death of Jerome Lucero.
