On March 11, 2021, Fernando F.H. Martinez, a 35-year-old resident of Española, New Mexico, tragically lost his life in a violent incident in Chamita, a rural area in northern New Mexico. Martinez was found deceased in the rear seat of an SUV, with three other individuals nearby who had sustained injuries. Two additional occupants of the vehicle were unharmed.
Investigations revealed that the group had traveled to the residence of Andrew Valdez, 50, in Chamita to purchase methamphetamine. During the encounter, Andrew Valdez allegedly assaulted two individuals with a knife. As the group attempted to depart in their SUV, his son, Mario Valdez, 31, reportedly fired a rifle at the vehicle, resulting in Martinez's fatal injuries.
Subsequently, both Andrew and Mario Valdez were apprehended in connection with the incident. Andrew Valdez faced charges including two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, while Mario Valdez was charged with first-degree murder and multiple other offenses. At the time of reporting, online court records did not list attorneys for the father and son who might comment on their behalf.
Fernando Martinez was remembered by his family as a light and blessing to those who knew him. He attended Pojoaque High School and pursued college courses in Santa Fe and Albuquerque. Known for his ambition, he engaged in activities such as skiing, biking, and hiking, and was involved in campaign work during presidential races. His spiritual nature and concern for others were highlighted by his family, who noted his gentle spirit and protective nature.
