On the night of April 20, 2021, Arianna Hawkins arranged a drug transaction with Saavedra, which was a ruse to rob him and his girlfriend at a park.
The robbery involved a group of five individuals.
Ajole Guzman allegedly sprayed Saavedra in the face with mace as part of the robbery attempt. As Saavedra's girlfriend tried to drive away, Domminick Mullen, 21, shot and killed Saavedra, who was in the passenger seat of the fleeing car. The perpetrators then jumped into a car driven by Christian Benson, 21, and fled the scene. Elijah Tafoya, 19, was also aware of and involved in the robbery plan, although he did not directly participate in the physical confrontation.
All five individuals have been charged in connection with Saavedra's murder. Arianna Hawkins was arrested and charged with attempt to commit a felony and conspiracy. Christian Benson was arrested and charged with murder, attempt to commit a felony and conspiracy. He was already in custody for another case at the time of his arrest. Elijah Tafoya was also arrested and charged with attempt to commit a felony and conspiracy. Domminick Mullen is charged with murder, attempt to commit a felony and conspiracy. Ajole Guzman is charged with the same crimes as Mullen.
In the subsequent legal proceedings, Ajole Guzman pled guilty to 2nd-degree murder and conspiracy to commit armed robbery in May 2023. On October 19, 2023, she was sentenced to 18 years in the Department of Corrections for her role in Saavedra's death.
Domminick Mullen also faced significant legal consequences for his actions. On October 17, 2023, Mullen pleaded guilty to multiple crimes related to Saavedra's murder, further solidifying the legal accountability for the group involved in the fatal robbery.
