In the crisp autumn air of Albuquerque, New Mexico, a life full of promise was tragically cut short. Gibran Yarith Gomez-Martinez, a 15-year-old Hispanic male, was killed on October 29, 2022. The night was meant for celebration, a party unfolding at 771 Old Coors Dr. SW, but the festivities soon soured. An altercation broke out within the building, a dispute that quickly and violently escalated to gunfire. In the ensuing chaos, Gibran was fatally shot and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Reports later indicated the horror was compounded, as he was also run over during the incident.
The investigation that followed the untimely death of the teenager led authorities to identify several individuals believed to be involved in the fatal encounter. One of the suspects, Gustavo Guerrero, who was 16 at the time of the shooting, was apprehended. He later pleaded guilty to charges of shooting at a building and conspiracy for his role in the events that led to Gibran's death. Another individual, Brayan Omar Castillo-Galindo, 19, also faced justice. In early 2024, he pleaded no contest to a charge of second-degree murder and was subsequently sentenced to five years in prison for his part in the shooting.
The pursuit of justice for Gibran did not end there. A third suspect, Isaiah Cruz, was also charged with murder in connection with the case. It was reported that he was preparing to accept a plea deal for his involvement. A fourth person, Omar Castillo, was also implicated in the incident, though the specific details and status of his case remain less clear. The collective actions of these individuals brought a violent end to a young life, leaving a family and a community to mourn a future that will never be realized. Gibran was remembered as a loving child who cherished his many friendships and had a particular fondness for animals, especially dogs.
