On the quiet morning of November 19, 1978, a West Springfield police officer on patrol happened upon a grim scene at a rest stop off Route 5. Mark Harnish, a 20-year-old Caucasian male, and his companion, 18-year-old Theresa Marcoux, were found deceased just over a guardrail from Harnish's green Dodge pickup truck. Both had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
The truck's driver-side window was shattered, and blood was visible in and around the vehicle, a silent testament to the violence that had occurred in the early morning hours.
Mark, known as a quiet and polite young man, worked as a mechanic at a car repair shop. He and Theresa had both attended East Longmeadow High School. The couple had been at a friend's party, leaving together around 12:30 a.m. Investigators believe they were shot inside the pickup truck before their bodies were moved. A witness in the area later reported hearing several gunshots at approximately 4:00 a.m., piercing the stillness of the night. The initial investigation was fraught with challenges, as there appeared to be no clear motive for the brutal killings; robbery and sexual assault were quickly ruled out.
For over four decades, the case remained cold, a haunting mystery for the community and a source of enduring pain for the families of the young victims. Investigators had recovered a crucial piece of evidence from the scene: a single fingerprint, left in what appeared to be blood on the passenger-side vent window of the truck. Despite comparing this print to tens of thousands of others over the years, no match was ever found, and the trail to the killer went cold. Over time, tips would surface, but none led to a viable suspect, leaving the double homicide unsolved.
A significant breakthrough in the case finally came in October 2024, nearly 46 years after the murders. The Hampden District Attorney's office received a tip from an individual who named Timothy Scott Joley as being involved in the deaths of Mark and Theresa. This new lead prompted investigators to delve into Joley's background. They discovered that he had been living in Springfield at the time of the murders. A critical piece of the puzzle fell into place when they located a fingerprint identification card for Joley from a 2000 application for a taxi cab license. A comparison was made, and the latent print from Mark's truck was a match to Joley's left thumb.
Following this pivotal discovery, a two-count murder complaint and arrest warrant were issued for Timothy Scott Joley, then 71 years old and residing in Clearwater, Florida. On October 30, 2024, Joley was arrested at his home. There is currently no evidence to suggest that he knew either Mark Harnish or Theresa Marcoux. Joley later waived extradition and was set to be returned to Massachusetts to face charges for the long-unsolved murders, bringing a renewed hope for justice after decades of unanswered questions.
