In the early evening of June 10, 2015, 16-year-old Jonathan Dos Santos was riding his bicycle on Fuller Street in Dorchester, a neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. Tragically, his journey was cut short in a hail of gunfire. The young male was ambushed and shot, collapsing a short distance away. He was rushed to Boston Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into Jonathan's death quickly revealed a premeditated attack.
Surveillance footage from the area showed two individuals lying in wait for him. According to authorities, these two patiently waited at the intersection of Washington and Fuller streets, setting a trap for the unsuspecting teenager. The footage reportedly captured them pacing, talking, and laughing as they awaited his arrival. As Jonathan approached on his bike, one of the individuals gestured in a way that seemed to startle him. The other then stood up and fired multiple shots, one of which struck Jonathan in the neck.
Just days after the shooting, two teenage suspects were taken into custody. Dushawn Taylor-Gennis, 16, and Raeshawn Moody, 14, were arrested and charged with the murder of Jonathan Dos Santos. Investigators believe the motive for the killing was connected to Jonathan's refusal to join a gang. He had reportedly expressed fears to his basketball coach about being pressured and was scared to go to school. The arrests were made thanks to a combination of witness testimony and surveillance video. The mothers of the two suspects also played a role in their surrender to the police.
Dushawn Taylor-Gennis and Raeshawn Moody were both charged as adults with murder and unlawful possession of a firearm. At their arraignment, they pleaded not guilty and were ordered to be held without bail.
