On a summer evening in Boston, 20-year-old Jean Louis, a Black male, was fatally shot on July 11, 2015. The incident occurred on Bailey Street in the Dorchester neighborhood. Louis was inside a car when gunfire erupted, striking him in the chest. Another individual in the vehicle with him, a 16-year-old, was also wounded but survived the attack.
The investigation into the shooting led Boston Police to identify three suspects.
Tyshawn Pereira, 21, was charged with murder, while Michael Johnson-McNeil, then 19 or 20, and Bobby Robinson-Gilmere, 21, were charged as accessories after the fact. Prosecutors stated that Pereira fired shots into the car where Louis was seated. Johnson-McNeil and Robinson-Gilmere were linked to two cars present at the scene of the shooting.
A significant piece of evidence against Pereira was data from a GPS ankle bracelet he was required to wear as a condition of probation for a prior case. The tracking information reportedly placed him at the scene of the crime and showed him fleeing at a high rate of speed immediately after the shooting. All three men, who were from the Boston area, pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them. Pereira was ordered to be held without bail.
