On May 8, 2018, Amy Fanion, a 51-year-old Caucasian woman from Westfield, Massachusetts, died from a single gunshot wound to the head in her home. Her husband, Brian Fanion, a detective with the Westfield Police Department, called 911 to report that his wife had shot herself. The initial investigation treated her death as a suicide.
However, as Massachusetts State Police detectives delved deeper into the case, suspicions arose.
The trajectory of the bullet and the lack of gunshot residue on Amy Fanion's hands were inconsistent with a self-inflicted wound. Investigators obtained search warrants for the couple's home, computers, and phones, which uncovered incriminating evidence. This led to a shift in the investigation's focus toward Brian Fanion as a suspect.
Subsequent investigation revealed that Brian Fanion was having an affair and had been looking at apartments online in the hours before his wife's death. Prosecutors argued that his motive for killing his wife was to avoid sharing his pension in a divorce and to be with his lover. Further evidence presented at trial showed that Fanion had used his work computer to search for information on how divorce affects a pension and how to make a murder look like a suicide.
In November 2019, Brian Fanion was arrested and charged with the first-degree murder of his wife. His defense team argued that Amy Fanion had been struggling with mental health issues and had taken her own life. They maintained that Brian Fanion was innocent and had the support of his and Amy's families. Despite these claims, a jury found Brian Fanion guilty of first-degree murder in March 2023. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
