On the evening of July 11, 2019, a burst of violence shattered the quiet of a Fitchburg, Massachusetts neighborhood, leaving a young Black/African American man dead. Leon Wilson, a 23-year-old resident of Fitchburg, was shot near the intersection of Blossom Street and Pie Alley at approximately 9 p.m. First responders rushed him to a nearby Leominster hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The incident was quickly determined to be a homicide, launching an intensive investigation by the Fitchburg Police Department and State Police detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney's Office.
The investigation into Wilson's death revealed a story of a drug deal that had taken a deadly turn. Prosecutors later detailed that the entire encounter was a setup. Three men had conspired to rob Wilson of a backpack containing marijuana. During the course of this planned robbery, a struggle ensued, and Wilson was shot six times. For several months, the case remained under active investigation, with law enforcement piecing together evidence that included text messages and surveillance camera footage from the scene. The community was left seeking answers as detectives diligently worked to identify those responsible for the fatal shooting.
In December 2019, a significant breakthrough came when the Worcester County District Attorney announced charges against three individuals. Mugisha Jeanbosco, then 22, of Worcester, was identified as the shooter and charged with murder and armed robbery with a firearm. Two other men, 33-year-old Jason Robinson of Fitchburg and 18-year-old Jonathan Baez of Worcester, were also arrested. They faced charges of armed robbery and being accessories after the fact to murder for their roles in the deadly plot.
The legal process culminated in July 2025, when a Worcester Superior Court jury found Mugisha Jeanbosco guilty of first-degree murder and armed robbery. The conviction for first-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Subsequently, he was sentenced to serve this mandatory life sentence. The other two men involved, Jason Robinson and Jonathan Baez, were also charged in connection with the killing and were scheduled for future court appearances. The successful prosecution brought a measure of closure to the family of Leon Wilson, ensuring the man who pulled the trigger would be held accountable for his actions.
