Joseph Smith, aged 23, was fatally shot on September 21, 2015, in Chicago, Illinois. His death was part of the persistent wave of gun violence that has plagued many neighborhoods throughout the city. Smith was shot in the Austin neighborhood, an area on the West Side of Chicago that has been known for high rates of violent crime.
