On a summer evening in Springfield, Massachusetts, the life of 26-year-old Michael Paolercio was tragically cut short. On June 16, 2020, Paolercio, a male resident of Springfield, was shot and killed in the vicinity of Wilbraham Road. The incident prompted an investigation by the Springfield Police Department, who responded to the scene to begin piecing together the events that led to the young man's death.
The Hampden District Attorney's Office was also brought in to assist with the homicide investigation, a standard procedure for such a serious crime.
In the days following the shooting, authorities worked to identify both the victim and any potential suspects. The investigation led them to identify Earl Howard, a then 41-year-old man from Westfield, as a person of interest in connection with the fatal shooting. A warrant for his arrest was issued, and a search for him began, involving multiple law enforcement agencies. The search for the suspect concluded approximately a week and a half after the shooting. Following a tip, law enforcement officers were led to an address in North Adams, a city in the western part of the state. There, hiding in a closet, they found and arrested Earl Howard. He was taken into custody without incident and subsequently faced charges related to the murder of Michael Paolercio. The arrest brought a sense of progress in a case that had left a family and community mourning the loss of a young life to gun violence.
