In the early morning hours of Sunday, November 3, 2019, Gabriel Irizarry, a 31-year-old man from Holyoke, was driving his vehicle on Interstate 91 North in Springfield, Massachusetts. Tragically, his journey was cut short in a senseless act of violence. Occupants of another vehicle opened fire on his car, striking him. The incident was witnessed by an on-duty Massachusetts State Police Trooper who was on patrol at the time.
The shooting was a case of mistaken identity.
The assailants had wrongly identified Mr. Irizarry's vehicle as belonging to someone they were targeting. Following the shooting, an investigation was launched by the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit. The investigation ultimately led to the identification and arrest of four individuals in connection with the murder.
The suspects were identified as Luis Cotto, Keith Cotto, and Isaiah Fraticelli, all of Springfield, and Victor Espinosa of Chicopee. In May 2023, a Hampden County jury found all four men guilty of murder in the first degree. They were also convicted on lesser charges of possession of a firearm and possession of a loaded firearm. For the murder of Gabriel Irizarry, all four men were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
