In the early morning hours of January 6, 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet of Morton Street in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood. When police arrived at the scene around 1:00 a.m., they discovered a young man suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim was 22-year-old Lance Norwood, a Black / African American male from the city's Hyde Park area. He was rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, clinging to life.
For fifteen days, he fought, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries on January 21, 2021.
The Boston Police Department promptly launched a homicide investigation into Norwood's death. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner officially ruled the manner of his death a homicide. Despite the passage of time, the case remains one of the city's unsolved homicides for 2021. Law enforcement officials have continued to appeal to the public for any information that might lead to a breakthrough in the case. To date, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified in connection with the fatal shooting. The investigation into the death of Lance Norwood is officially still active and ongoing.
Lance Ross Norwood Jr., as he was lovingly known to his family, was born in Boston on February 10, 1998. He was remembered as a talented and creative young man with a deep appreciation for nature, animals, and children. An avid and skilled athlete, he excelled as an All-Star baseball player in local leagues and also trained in Taekwondo and boxing, with aspirations of one day becoming a professional boxer. His creative spirit extended to the kitchen, where he enjoyed crafting his own culinary dishes, and to photography, with a keen eye for capturing Boston's architecture and the world around him. His family described him as fiercely loving and loyal, and he was cherished by his parents, brother, and a wide circle of extended family and friends who were left to navigate the tragic loss of a life cut short by violence.
