On a cold January evening in 1981, twenty-year-old Shari Lynn Hull was working with her friend and co-worker, Beth Wilmot, cleaning an office building in Keizer, Oregon. The two young women were nearing the end of their shift on January 18th when their lives were irrevocably changed. A man, his face partially obscured, entered the building, brandishing a gun.
He forced both women into a back room where they were sexually assaulted.
The assailant then shot both Shari and Beth in the head before fleeing the scene. Shari Lynn Hull tragically succumbed to her injuries and died. Miraculously, despite being shot, Beth Wilmot survived the horrific attack. Her survival and ability to provide a description of her attacker would prove crucial in the investigation that followed.
The investigation into Shari's murder and Beth's attempted murder led police to a suspect named Randall Brent Woodfield. Woodfield, a former college football player and one-time Green Bay Packers draft pick, was identified by Beth Wilmot as the man who had attacked them. The evidence against him mounted, and he was arrested and charged with the crimes.
Randall Woodfield was convicted of the murder of Shari Lynn Hull and the attempted murder of Beth Wilmot. He was sentenced to life in prison. Authorities would later link Woodfield to a string of violent crimes, including numerous sexual assaults and murders, that occurred along the Interstate 5 corridor in Washington, Oregon, and California, earning him the moniker "The I-5 Killer." Though suspected in many other cases, his conviction for the murder of Shari Hull ensured he would remain behind bars.
