In the late spring of 2015, a family tragedy unfolded in a quiet Springfield, Oregon, home, culminating in the deaths of Randy Ringquist, a 63-year-old male, and his wife. The grim discovery was made after a concerned out-of-state relative repeatedly tried and failed to get in touch with the couple, prompting them to request that police perform a welfare check.
When officers first visited the Ringquist residence on June 15, and again on June 22, they found a note on the door claiming the
family was away. However, on a third visit the following day, an officer knocked and the man inside, later identified as the couple's 38-year-old son, Jeremy Daniel Ringquist, asked for a police negotiator. When he wouldn't come to the door, more officers arrived and forced their way into the home. Inside, they found Jeremy with what appeared to be self-inflicted injuries. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
A subsequent search of the house revealed a horrific scene: the bodies of Randy and his wife, Karen, were found inside a chest-style freezer. An investigation into the deaths quickly pointed to their son, who had moved back into his parents' home about six months prior following a divorce. Neighbors described the family's relationship as tumultuous, with some alleging that Randy was often verbally abusive towards his wife and son.
Jeremy Ringquist was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated murder in connection with his parents' deaths. According to a court affidavit, Jeremy told investigators that on May 31, he and his father were arguing. He claimed he fired a handgun just as his mother, Karen, walked out of a bedroom, shooting her by mistake. He then shot his father in the arm. Jeremy alleged that his father told him to "finish the job," at which point he shot him in the head and chest. He then concealed both of his parents' bodies in the freezer.
The case took another dark turn when, on the night of July 1, 2015, Jeremy Ringquist was found in his cell at the Lane County Jail after a suicide attempt. He died in the hospital the following day from his injuries, closing the final chapter on a devastating family saga.
