On May 31, 2015, a quiet home in Springfield, Oregon, became the scene of a double homicide that would remain undiscovered for weeks. Karen Ringquist, a 65-year-old woman, and her husband, Randy Ringquist, were shot and killed inside their residence. The tragedy came to light only after a concerned relative from out of state, unable to reach the couple, repeatedly asked police to conduct a welfare check.
Authorities visited the home on two occasions in June, but found nothing amiss
initially, only a note on the door indicating the family was away. On a third visit on June 23, an officer knocked and the man inside, later identified as the couple's 38-year-old son Jeremy Daniel Ringquist, called 911 asking for a negotiator. When officers forced their way into the house, they found Jeremy with what appeared to be self-inflicted injuries. He was hospitalized, and a subsequent search of the home led to the grim discovery of Karen and Randy's bodies hidden inside a chest freezer.
The investigation revealed a tumultuous family dynamic. Neighbors reported that Jeremy had moved in with his parents about six months prior following a divorce and that his father was often verbally abusive. Following his arrest on two counts of aggravated murder, Jeremy told investigators that he had been arguing with his father about immigration when he fired a handgun. He claimed he shot his mother by mistake as she emerged from a bedroom. He then shot his father, who allegedly told him to "finish the job."
The case took another turn when the sole suspect, Jeremy Ringquist, died by suicide in his Lane County Jail cell. He was found hanging from bed linens on July 1 and died in the hospital the following day. His death brought an end to the criminal proceedings, leaving a somber conclusion to the violent events that transpired in the Ringquist family home.
