On October 7, 2015, 47-year-old David Joseph Branze of Gresham, Oregon, tragically lost his life in a hunting accident near Meacham in Umatilla County. While deer hunting with his father, Louis Neil Branze, 76, of Seaside, Oregon, David was fatally shot. The Umatilla County Sheriff's Office responded to the incident, which was reported as an accidental shooting.
David was born on September 17, 1968, to Louis and Mary Branze.
He graduated from Parkrose High School in 1987, where he was recognized as an excellent hockey player. His passion for the outdoors was evident through his dedication to hunting and fishing, particularly in the Mt. Emily area near La Grande, Oregon, where he hunted with his father for over 37 years. At the time of his passing, David was employed as a pilot car driver, escorting heavy equipment and oversized loads—a job he greatly enjoyed.
The Umatilla County Sheriff's Office conducted a thorough investigation into the incident, treating it with the same rigor as any death investigation to ensure all questions were answered. Sheriff Terry Rowan emphasized the importance of this approach, noting that the case remained open pending the completion of investigative procedures.
A celebration of David's life was held on October 17, 2015, at Ross Hollywood Chapel in Portland, Oregon. He is survived by his parents, Louis 'Neil' and Mary Branze, and his loyal companion, a trail dog named Missy. In honor of David's memory, his family suggested that donations be made to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, reflecting his deep appreciation for wildlife and conservation.
