Cory Jonell Lumber, a 48-year-old White female, was found deceased on Saturday, July 2, 2016, inside her apartment in the Mill Park neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. The cause of her death was determined to be a single gunshot wound.
Later that same evening, authorities arrested her 37-year-old live-in boyfriend, Spencer Thomas Johnson, in connection with her death.
He was subsequently charged with murder and unlawful use of a weapon, with the charges designated as domestic violence offenses. The weapon used in the incident was identified as a 9mm pistol.
Further investigation into Johnson's background revealed a history of domestic violence. Eight months prior to Lumber's death, a former girlfriend had reported to police that she was afraid of him and believed he would eventually kill her. In that incident, Johnson had reportedly threatened the woman with a gun. As a result of that earlier event, he pleaded guilty to interfering with a police officer and was sentenced to 18 months of probation, which included restrictions on possessing firearms and a requirement to attend a domestic violence class.
