On a Friday morning in Wilsonville, Oregon, the life of Carl Hellinger, a 36-year-old Caucasian male, was tragically cut short. The date was November 15, 2019, and Hellinger, a respected chef and manager at Heritage Specialty Foods, was at his place of work on Boberg Road when the unthinkable happened. A former employee, from whom Hellinger had recently separated from the company, returned to the facility with violent intentions.
The alleged assailant, identified as 25-year-old Camilo
Santiago-Santiago of Woodburn, reportedly entered the building around 8:20 a.m. armed with a handgun. He proceeded to walk into Hellinger's office and fired multiple rounds, fatally wounding his former boss. First responders were called to the scene, but Hellinger succumbed to his injuries on-site. His colleagues and the company were left grief-stricken, remembering him as a loved, respected, and diligent manager.
Immediately following the shooting, Santiago-Santiago fled the scene in a red sedan, heading south towards Woodburn. Law enforcement was quick to respond, and a Marion County Sheriff's Office deputy spotted the suspect's vehicle. A pursuit led them to a residential neighborhood behind the Woodburn Premium Outlets. There, on Woodland Avenue, Santiago-Santiago barricaded himself inside his car, leading to a tense standoff with multiple law enforcement agencies, including SWAT teams from both Clackamas and Marion counties.
The standoff began around 8:50 a.m. and lasted for nearly an hour. During this time, the suspect reportedly yelled at officers to shoot him. Ultimately, at approximately 9:30 a.m., he exited the vehicle with his hands raised and surrendered to the authorities. Camilo Santiago-Santiago was taken into custody without further incident. He was subsequently booked into the Clackamas County Jail and charged with second-degree murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm. A judge ordered him to be held without bail.
