On November 21, 2021, a tragic incident unfolded in the Centennial Community Association neighborhood of outer East Portland, resulting in the death of 29-year-old Mariela Gonzalez-Rocha. The events began with a welfare check call at 3:37 p.m. when a crying woman, later identified as Gonzalez-Rocha, called 9-1-1 to report that she was being held hostage at the “D Street Salal Apartments” located on SE 171st Avenue, just north of SE Division Street.
