On Halloween night, October 31, 2022, in the Strawberry Heights neighborhood of Madras, Oregon, 24-year-old Hispanic/Latino male Edgar Miguel Torres-Aguilera was shot multiple times. The incident occurred at approximately 7:45 p.m. near the corner of Leisek Way and Maliah Avenue, a street filled with children trick-or-treating. Witnesses reported that a white SUV pulled up to the area, and shots were fired at Torres-Aguilera.
Despite the efforts of neighbors who rushed to provide aid, he succumbed to his injuries while being transported by a medical helicopter to a hospital in Bend.
The investigation into the shooting was a collaborative effort involving local law enforcement and the Oregon State Police. Authorities identified two suspects in connection with the homicide: Chance Corey Lee Stwyer, then 22, and Andre Sterling James Spino, then 18. In December 2022, a statewide alert was issued for the two individuals, who were considered armed and dangerous. Their arrests came in the following months, with Spino being apprehended in January 2023 and Stwyer in February 2023, following a raid on a home in Warm Springs by Madras police and the FBI.
Both suspects faced legal proceedings for their involvement in Torres-Aguilera's death. In March 2025, Chance Corey Lee Stwyer was sentenced to 14 years and two months in prison. Following this, in April 2025, Andre Sterling Spino pleaded guilty to attempted murder as part of a plea agreement and was sentenced to 14 years in prison. According to the terms of their agreements, neither will be eligible for early release programs but will receive credit for the time they had already served.
