In the late summer of 2003, a sense of fear gripped the Charleston, West Virginia area as a series of sniper-style shootings terrorized the community. Among the victims was Jeanie Patton, a 31-year-old Caucasian woman, whose life was tragically cut short on the evening of August 14, 2003. Patton was at a Speedway gas station in Campbells Creek, simply preparing to pay for her gasoline, when she was struck by a single bullet to the back of her head.
Her death was part of a string of shootings that also claimed the lives of Gary Carrier Jr. and Okey Meadows Jr. within a few days, creating a climate of fear and uncertainty.
The investigation into these seemingly random acts of violence unfolded over several years. Initially, law enforcement officials were able to connect the shootings of Patton and Meadows through ballistic evidence, confirming they were killed with the same. 22-caliber rifle. A witness later came forward, stating that Lester had confided in him, saying, "he had taken something important to me, so I'll take something important to him," and told him to watch the news. The other two victims were believed to have been shot to create the illusion of a random sniper and divert attention from the targeted killing of Patton.
In August 2011, Shawn Lester was indicted for all three murders. A year later, in a plea deal, he pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of Jeanie Patton. As part of this agreement, the murder charges for Gary Carrier Jr. and Okey Meadows Jr. were dropped. Lester was sentenced to 40 years in prison for Patton's murder and received an additional six years on federal firearms charges. During his sentencing, Lester expressed no remorse and did not apologize to the families of the victims. While the conviction brought a measure of closure, the families of the other two victims were left without a definitive answer as to who killed their loved ones.
