An argument on a Friday evening in Logan County, West Virginia, took a violent turn, forever altering a family. On February 17, 2017, in a home on Thunder Road near Chapmanville, a dispute between two brothers escalated, culminating in a burst of gunfire. Seventy-seven-year-old Charles Kinney, a White male, found himself the victim of a shotgun blast delivered at close range. The projectile tore into his leg, leaving him with a serious wound that required immediate medical attention.
The alleged shooter was identified as his own brother, Billy Kinney, who was 62 at the time. In the immediate aftermath of the violent encounter, West Virginia State Police troopers responded to the scene. They took Billy Kinney into custody, and he was subsequently charged with malicious wounding for the act committed against his sibling.
Following his arrest, he was lodged in the Southwestern Regional Jail to await legal proceedings.
In the wake of the shooting, Charles Kinney was rushed to Logan Regional Medical Center to be treated for the severe injury he had sustained. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, his condition was grave. Two days after the tragic altercation with his brother, on February 19, 2017, Charles Kinney passed away at CAMC Memorial in Charleston, West Virginia. A United States Navy veteran, he was remembered by friends as a wonderful man who loved the outdoors, particularly hunting and fishing. His death left behind a grieving family and a community to grapple with the violent end to a life.
