In the early morning hours of February 3, 2014, the quiet of a Cedar Rapids, Iowa neighborhood was broken by a grim discovery. Clifton Sparks, a 31-year-old Black / African American man, was found lying unresponsive in the 1800 block of B Avenue NE. Emergency services were called to the scene, but it was too late to save him. Sparks had sustained a traumatic injury and was pronounced dead, turning a cold winter night into the scene of a homicide investigation.
