In the spring of 2022, the life of 59-year-old Jeffrey Dwayne Gillom, a Black male from Des Moines, Iowa, was tragically cut short. On a Sunday evening, Gillom was in the 2400 block of Hickman Road when gunfire erupted. Both he and a woman were struck by the bullets. Emergency services responded to the scene, and Gillom was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment of his injuries. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his wounds the following day, on April 4, 2022.
The female victim sustained serious injuries but survived the shooting.
The initial investigation into the double shooting did not immediately lead to any arrests, leaving a sense of uncertainty in the community. As detectives worked the case, a suspect was eventually identified and apprehended. Tyrone Cameron, 30, was charged with the murder of Jeffrey Gillom, bringing a glimmer of hope for justice to Gillom's family and friends. The case against Cameron proceeded through the legal system and ultimately went to trial in Polk County.
In a surprising turn of events, the Polk County jury acquitted Tyrone Cameron of the murder charge. However, the pursuit of justice did not end there. In a separate federal case, the same facts that were presented during the murder trial were used to charge Cameron with a firearm offense. This time, the outcome was different. A federal jury found Cameron guilty of the firearm charge, leading to a conviction. This meant that while he was not found legally responsible for Gillom's death, he would still face consequences related to the incident.
